Just trying to get the most out of life by figuring it out
Sick of It
Published on November 6, 2005 By So Many Questions In Blogging
Ok, I am so pissed off right now. My roommate is incredibly dirty, extremely gross. She never ever ever cleans. I am the one who ends up cleaning the entire kitchen and entire bathroom on my own, she never vacuums, never throws out the garbage, never ties up the bag (but chooses to overfill it instead), never even cleans the counter after she eats (guess who does ALL that stuff?)... She doesn't even pay the bill until I say hey, pay the damn bill already!
And to top it all off, I went home for the weekend, and when I came back (at midnight, while also being sick), I came to find that something had spilled all over the kitchen floor, something incredibly disgusting and sticky and she just left it everywhere. It was all over the floor and on the table, and she just waited for me to come home to clean it up. What the F is that! And we have freaking fruit flies again, in the matter of a weekend! Seriously, I can't take it anymore, and no matter how many times I've asked for her help or told her exactly what to do, she just lets it be and I am on my last nerve about it.

Any tips? Please!

if they're in your kitchen, they may be breeding in the drainpipe (don't bother looking, the maggots are way to small to find without some kinda scientific equipment). use something to block the drain (like water & airtight) when it's not being used. in about a week, they should disappear.

sadly, there's no equally quick legal way of getting rid of your roommate.

You would think boiling some water(like a pot's worth) and pouring that down the sink would get rid of them.

i'd sure the hell move out if i lived in the drain, but...

about a year ago, someone turned up the thermostat on this building's common water heater. what comes outta the tap now is so hot, it's dangerous (i'm guessing 170+f). a daily ritual of filling the sink...using a large channellocks to open the drainplug...repeated 4 times in a row for a week didn't seem to have much of an effect in my living laboratory.

nothin--flytape, 2 kinda sprays, hourly hunts with a long rubber band, total denial of assets (even to the point of leaving the crib for 2 weeks), strange potions containing vinegars, brown sugar & water--i tried ever really worked til i realized they hadda be breeding in the drainpipe and launched my campaign to keep em locked in. (i woulda tried geckoes if they were resident natives cuz it's easier to catch 20 geckoes than 100 fruit flies; by the same token it's easier to catch 4 cats than 20 geckoes...and finally 1 wolf rather than 4 cats, but i digress.)

ugghhh!! the roomate from hell. I had one once. I ended up moving out.

I would tell her that if she thinks you are the live-in housekeeper then she should pay you for your services and you should pay a smaller percentage of the rent. maybe nothing. I gues dirt doesn't bother her. Maybe you could make a chore chart and switch jobs every other week or month but I would assume that she would just ignore it.

I would start looking at different living arrangements if at all possible.

start charging for "maid service"

I'm with ModMan. Tell her that you're going to start charging her by the hour for cleaning services and that you'll just tack it onto her portion of the rent.

Thanks for your comments, guys.
She and I are good friends so kicking her out or moving out is kinda out of the question and also with our circumstances. I've been really patient up to this point with the fact that I did all the work, but this time it was mostly the fact that she just left the stuff for me to clean that sent me over the edge. And after I snapped at her about it, she did try cleaning it up, but she did such a shitty job cuz she cleaned it in just one part and didn't even think to look to see if it was spread out anywhere else (not to mention her apparently being pissed off at me now). So of course, I cleaned the rest of it cuz I hated walking into the kitchen with stickiness everywhere. I think it's more a matter of her lacking common sense and any sense of cleanliness at all that makes her the way she is. (You should see her case for contacts...even that's absolutely disgusting!)

King & History ~ Thanks for the tips about the fruit flies. I think it was just the garbage that had to be thrown out cuz I did that and it's looking better.

Loca ~ I think I am gonna try the list of chores, but I have a feeling that either she will do it really half-assed or just wait for it to be my turn.

Mason, Mod & dharma ~ If all else fails, that will be my last attempt. Haha. Thanks.
